A veteran actor’s death is now a murder case

James Handy, the veteran character actor known for roles in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” “The West Wing,” and many other film and television projects, died after a stabbing in Tarzana, Los Angeles, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. He was 81.

Police say officers responded around 9:30 a.m. to a home in the 19200 block of Erwin Street after a 911 call reported trouble at the residence. When officers arrived, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to his chest. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, Michael Gledhill, 44, was arrested at the scene. Authorities said Gledhill lived at the home with his mother, who was Handy’s girlfriend.

Prosecutors have now charged Gledhill with one count of murder, along with a special allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon, identified by investigators as a knife. If convicted as charged, he faces 26 years to life in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Gledhill is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the case began with a disturbing 911 call. According to police, the caller made a strange statement before officers arrived. When officers reached the home, they found Handy in the front yard.
