The The Unlikely Cook trailer puts Awkwafina in an unfamiliar role: a member of a restaurant family who has to learn how to cook before she can attempt to carry that legacy forward. Apple TV released the official trailer on October 1 for the eight-episode culinary docuseries, which premieres globally Friday, November 6.

The series follows Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, on a cross-country journey built around Lum’s, the Cantonese restaurant her family operated in Flushing, New York. Rather than presenting her as an experienced celebrity chef, the premise begins with the opposite problem: she enters the project without the kitchen skills needed to revive the family restaurant legacy she inherited.

The Unlikely Cook trailer turns family history into a cooking challenge

The restaurant at the center of the story reaches back to Lum’s family history. People reports that Lum’s belonged to Awkwafina’s great-grandfather and operated in Flushing, giving the series a more personal objective than a conventional celebrity food show.

Awkwafina’s challenge is not simply to visit notable restaurants or sample regional dishes. Apple says she sets out to build practical cooking skills while exploring contemporary Asian American cuisine and considering how Lum’s could be reimagined for another generation.

That journey takes her to the Culinary Institute of America for a crash course before expanding across the country. She travels for Texas barbecue with Jimmy O. Yang, learns from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan, and visits Hawai‘i to explore the tiki culture that influenced her grandmother’s restaurant.

The itinerary eventually reaches Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where the series moves from lessons and travel into the pressure of actually serving customers. The season builds toward an opening night, with Awkwafina’s grandmother positioned as the person whose reaction carries the greatest personal weight.

Apple first announced the project in 2025

The series itself is not a newly announced project. Apple first announced the eight-episode production in November 2025 under the title The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina. At the time, the company established the family-restaurant premise and Awkwafina’s role as both star and executive producer.

The October trailer is a material new development because it provides the first extended look at the actual journey, establishes the November 6 launch and shows how the series connects family history, travel and hands-on kitchen training.

BroadwayWorld’s trailer coverage independently confirms the eight-episode format, the cross-country cooking journey and the progression toward the Los Angeles restaurant opening.

Roy Choi, Martin Yan and Jimmy O. Yang join Awkwafina’s journey

The culinary figures appearing along the way give the show a structure beyond celebrity travel. Roy Choi and Martin Yan bring different perspectives on Asian American food and professional cooking, while the Texas segment with Jimmy O. Yang moves the series outside the environments most directly connected to Awkwafina’s family history.

Apple describes the show as a culinary docuseries, while its Apple TV listing categorizes it within documentary and travel programming. That combination fits the format shown in the trailer: part skills challenge, part family-history project and part road trip.

The series is produced for Apple TV by Twofour. Nora Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies serve as executive producers. Twofour previously worked with Apple on The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy.

Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook premieres November 6

All eight episodes are tied to one central question: whether someone who grew up around a restaurant legacy can acquire enough understanding of food and restaurant work to reinterpret that history rather than simply trade on it.

The project also gives Apple another nonfiction title alongside its scripted fall programming. Readers exploring the service’s broader catalog can find established series in TSJ’s guide to the best shows on Apple TV.

Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook premieres globally November 6. The official Apple TV trailer shows Awkwafina moving from uncertain kitchen experiments to professional instruction and the restaurant opening that ultimately tests what she has learned.
