Marvel Reveals New ‘X-Men’ Cast With Sadie Sink, Kit Connor and Adam Driver at D23

The Marvel X-Men cast moved from speculation to an official lineup on August 14, when Marvel Studios introduced several of the actors who will lead its next theatrical version of the mutant superhero team during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim. Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey, Kit Connor will portray Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, and Christopher Abbott has been cast as Professor Charles Xavier, with the film scheduled to open May 5, 2028.

The announcement also confirmed Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver appeared through a recorded video to announce that he will play Nathaniel Milbury, a name associated with the Marvel villain Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier is directing the still-untitled film.

Marvel X-Men cast brings a new mutant team into focus

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made the announcement during the Marvel portion of Disney’s August 14 showcase. According to The Walt Disney Company’s official D23 recap, Feige was joined by Schreier and Sink before the rest of the newly confirmed cast members were introduced.

Sink’s involvement carries an additional connection to Marvel’s current theatrical storyline. Disney identified her as Jean Grey following the character’s appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, placing the actress at the center of Marvel’s emerging mutant plans rather than introducing Jean for the first time in the eventual X-Men film.

The rest of the lineup establishes recognizable members of the mutant universe around her. Connor takes over the role of Cyclops, while Abbott becomes the latest actor to portray Professor Xavier. Navarrette will play Rogue, Boyd will portray Storm and Weaving steps into the role of Emma Frost.

The Associated Press independently confirmed the casting announcement following the D23 presentation, including Driver’s involvement and the May 2028 theatrical release.

Adam Driver joins Marvel as Nathaniel Milbury

Driver was the one major cast member who did not join the group onstage. Instead, Marvel presented a recorded appearance in which the actor announced that he will play Nathaniel Milbury.

The name carries considerable significance in Marvel comics, where it has been used as an identity connected to Mister Sinister. Marvel’s D23 announcement identifies Driver specifically as Nathaniel Milbury, so the film’s precise interpretation of that character should remain separate from assumptions based solely on comic-book continuity until Marvel reveals more about the story.

Reuters reported following the showcase that Driver is part of the new mutant film alongside the newly announced ensemble. The casting gives the project another established lead as Marvel begins defining the opposition its new X-Men will face.

Jake Schreier will direct Marvel’s new X-Men movie

The film is being directed by Jake Schreier, continuing his relationship with Marvel Studios after working within the company’s cinematic universe. The D23 presentation did not reveal a complete plot synopsis, leaving the specific circumstances that bring this version of the X-Men together unresolved.

What Marvel did establish is a much clearer character foundation. Professor Xavier, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Rogue represent several of the team’s most enduring identities, while Emma Frost has occupied both adversarial and allied roles in different eras of Marvel storytelling.

The composition gives Marvel considerable room to develop relationships familiar to comic readers without simply reproducing one previous movie lineup.

The X-Men enter a different Marvel era

Marvel’s new film arrives after years of gradually introducing mutant-related characters and concepts into its interconnected films and television projects. The D23 announcement also established May 5, 2028 as the theatrical release date. That gives Marvel nearly two years between the casting reveal and the planned arrival of the film.

Major questions remain. Marvel has not publicly announced the complete supporting cast, a final title or a detailed synopsis. It also has not established how directly events from other Marvel films will determine the story of the new team.

Those unknowns are significant, but the August 14 presentation resolved the question audiences had been following most closely: who will become the core of Marvel Studios’ first full theatrical X-Men lineup.

With Sink, Connor, Abbott, Weaving, Navarrette, Boyd and Driver now officially attached, the studio has moved the project beyond casting rumors and into a defined new phase. The next step will be showing how those characters fit together when Marvel’s mutants formally assemble on the big screen in 2028.
