The televised performances and awards told only part of the story inside the 2026 MTV VMAs. Away from the main stage, photographers at the Peacock Theater captured artists greeting one another backstage, talking from their seats and posing together after some of the night’s biggest moments.

The photographs create a different record of the September 27 ceremony. Taylor Swift and Madonna crossed paths after entering the night as two of its most prominent honorees, LISA connected with Tyla around her performance, and Nirvana’s surviving members were photographed together during a night that brought their history with MTV back to the forefront. CBS and MTV’s official results document the awards that provided the backdrop to those interactions.

1. Taylor Swift and Madonna meet inside the VMAs

One of the night’s most immediately recognizable pairings brought Taylor Swift and Madonna together inside the Peacock Theater. Independent post-show photography also documented the two artists together during the ceremony, alongside numerous other backstage and audience encounters.

Both arrived with significant storylines attached to the ceremony. Madonna returned to the VMA stage for her first performance at the show in 23 years, while Swift received MTV’s inaugural Artist Director Honors. CBS and MTV created the latter recognition around sustained work by music artists behind the camera.

Their photograph offers a quieter counterpoint to those televised milestones: two artists whose relationships with the music-video format span different generations meeting away from their individual stage appearances.

2. LISA and Tyla share a backstage moment

LISA and Tyla were photographed together backstage after Tyla introduced the BLACKPINK member’s performance.

LISA used the ceremony to give “SaWaDiKa” its first televised performance, incorporating imagery connected to Thailand into the production. She also left the ceremony with the Best Pop award for “Dream,” a result confirmed in the official winners list.

Tyla’s role as presenter gave the pair a direct connection within the broadcast, while the backstage photography captured what happened around that appearance rather than another view of the performance itself.

3. Dave Grohl and Pat Smear sit together before Nirvana’s Vanguard moment

Dave Grohl and Pat Smear were photographed together in the audience during a ceremony that would eventually bring them onstage with Krist Novoselic.

Nirvana received the 2026 Video Vanguard Award, 34 years after the band’s first VMA performance. During the acceptance, Novoselic placed Kurt Cobain at the center of the band’s visual legacy and enduring influence.

The audience photograph is therefore useful precisely because it is understated. It documents part of the evening surrounding the formal Vanguard presentation rather than simply duplicating the acceptance photographs.

4. Chuck D joins Nirvana’s surviving members

Public Enemy’s Chuck D introduced Nirvana’s Video Vanguard tribute before joining Grohl, Novoselic and Smear for photographs around the presentation.

The resulting images connect two acts that helped define different corners of MTV’s late-1980s and 1990s music culture. They also document the presenter with the musicians being honored rather than separating the introduction from the acceptance that followed.

The broader collection of photographs from the night included similar crossovers among performers, presenters and guests. W’s post-show gallery independently documented Grohl and Smear together along with numerous other interactions inside the theater.

5. Charli xcx and RAYE reconnect inside the theater

Charli xcx and RAYE were another pairing captured away from the principal broadcast action.

Both had visible roles during the ceremony. RAYE participated in the multi-artist George Michael tribute, while Charli appeared during Madonna’s opening performance.

Their photograph is one example of how the audience and backstage areas became meeting points between artists who otherwise appeared in completely different parts of the telecast.

6. RAYE, Charli xcx and Paris Hilton form an unexpected trio

Official photography also captured RAYE and Charli xcx with Paris Hilton, creating one of the night’s less predictable groupings. The three-person encounter is among the combinations independently documented in post-show photography from inside the ceremony.

The image works because it does not require a manufactured narrative. Awards shows routinely bring performers, presenters, nominees and guests into the same spaces, and the photograph simply documents three recognizable figures crossing paths during the evening.

7. Sombr and Alex Warren meet in the audience

Sombr and Alex Warren were photographed together during a night when Sombr had multiple reasons to be in the spotlight.

He participated in the George Michael tribute, performing “Faith” and “Father Figure,” and wore a leather jacket that had belonged to Michael during the Faith Tour. The tribute’s originally announced lineup and purpose were established by CBS and MTV before the ceremony.

The audience photograph offers a useful contrast with those performance images, showing the artist away from the carefully constructed tribute staging.

8. Orville Peck and Shaboozey cross paths

Orville Peck and Shaboozey also met inside the ceremony, bringing together two artists whose work has expanded the boundaries around contemporary country music.

Peck had an additional role in one of the night’s major tribute sequences, introducing the George Michael performance before Sombr, RAYE, Teddy Swims and surprise guest Adam Lambert took over the stage.

9. Tyla poses with the Moon Person

Not every photograph from inside the ceremony depended on a celebrity pairing. Tyla was also captured with MTV’s Moon Person, turning one of the show’s most recognizable symbols into part of the backstage visual record.

The photograph came on a night when Tyla served as a presenter and also drew attention before the ceremony for her ultra-low-rise blue Mowalola look.

10. Troye Sivan and Charli xcx reunite

Troye Sivan and Charli xcx were photographed together inside the show, a pairing with considerably more history than a chance awards-night encounter.

The longtime collaborators previously toured together and have repeatedly appeared on one another’s music, making their VMA photograph an example of an existing creative relationship resurfacing in the middle of the ceremony.

11. Isabel May and David Corenswet step backstage together

All Rights Reserved.

Actors Isabel May and David Corenswet were photographed together backstage after appearing as presenters. CBS and MTV’s ceremony materials placed actors alongside musicians and other entertainment figures throughout the presenter lineup.

Their presence is also a reminder that the VMAs’ backstage ecosystem extends beyond recording artists. Actors and other entertainment figures move through the same press and presentation areas as nominees and performers, producing combinations that are less likely to occur at a concert or music festival.

12. Snoop Dogg and Taylor Swift close the circle

The evening’s host, Snoop Dogg, was photographed with Swift during a ceremony in which both had unusually prominent roles.

Snoop hosted and executive produced the Los Angeles broadcast, while Swift received Artist Director Honors and won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.” CBS’s official VMA hub identifies the Peacock Theater ceremony and its September 27 broadcast on CBS and MTV.

Together, the photographs from inside the 2026 MTV VMAs provide something the broadcast itself cannot always linger on: the smaller interactions taking place between performances, presentations and acceptance speeches. They turn the ceremony from a sequence of stage moments into a broader snapshot of the artists and entertainers who happened to share the same room.
