Jalen Brunson Opens ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season 52 as KATSEYE Makes Musical-Guest Debut
The Knicks star brought his championship teammates to Studio 8H while KATSEYE performed “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti” in the September 26 premiere.
The Jalen Brunson SNL Season 52 premiere brought the New York Knicks star from Madison Square Garden to Studio 8H on Saturday, September 26, as Brunson made his first hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live and KATSEYE made its debut as the show’s musical guest.
The episode leaned into Brunson’s championship season with the Knicks, bringing several of his teammates into the show while giving KATSEYE two performance slots for “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti.” The premiere also marked the first episode for new featured players Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter.
Jalen Brunson’s SNL Season 52 premiere brings the Knicks to Studio 8H
NBCUniversal originally announced Brunson as the Season 52 premiere host earlier in September, pairing the reigning NBA Finals MVP with KATSEYE for the September 26 broadcast.
Once the episode arrived, the connection between Brunson’s basketball career and his first SNL appearance became central to the night. His opening monologue referenced the Knicks’ championship run and eventually brought teammates Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart onto the Studio 8H stage.

NBC News’ post-show account confirmed the four Knicks appearances and noted that Brunson became the fifth NBA player to host the long-running sketch series, following Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and LeBron James.
Brunson entered the show after a defining year on the court. He was named NBA Finals MVP after helping New York win its first championship in 53 years, giving SNL a host whose relationship with the city extended well beyond entertainment.
KATSEYE performs “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti”
KATSEYE’s appearance represented another first for the premiere. The global girl group had never previously served as an SNL musical guest.
The group performed “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti,” two songs from its third EP, WILD. The performances extended a promotional cycle that has taken KATSEYE from its latest record into an international tour and now onto the Studio 8H stage.
Universal Music’s recent KATSEYE updates identify both tracks as current singles from WILD, with “Animal” and “Hootie Frutti” continuing to chart after the EP’s August release. The label has also documented the group’s ongoing WILDWORLD tour.
KATSEYE was not limited to the musical stages during the episode. The group also appeared in a recorded sketch built around the fictional second season of The Debut: Dream Academy, the competition format connected to the group’s formation.
Boston.com’s September 27 recap likewise confirmed Brunson and KATSEYE’s respective debuts as the show returned for Season 52.

Season 52 begins with two new featured players
The premiere also provided the first full look at SNL‘s revised cast in action. Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter joined the show as featured players for Season 52, while several established performers returned.
The cast transition follows another round of changes at the long-running NBC series. For readers following the show across seasons, the Season 51 finale was hosted by Will Ferrell with Paul McCartney as musical guest, making Saturday’s episode the beginning of a new production cycle after the summer break.
Brunson appeared across multiple sketches during the premiere, including basketball-related material that made use of his public persona rather than treating his sports career merely as background to the hosting assignment.
That approach continued a long SNL tradition of building episodes around athletes willing to step outside their usual roles. Brunson’s appearance also carried an unusually strong New York connection because both the Knicks and Saturday Night Live are closely identified with the city.
What comes next for Saturday Night Live Season 52
Brunson’s episode begins a run of previously announced fall hosts and musical guests. Dakota Johnson is scheduled to host October 3 with Turnstile making its first appearance as musical guest. Shane Gillis follows October 10 with Rosalía, while Obsession star Inde Navarrette is scheduled for the Halloween episode with Gracie Abrams.
The show airs on NBC and streams through Peacock, continuing the live television and streaming arrangement NBC established for the new season.
For Brunson, the September 26 broadcast added a first SNL hosting credit to a year already defined by the Knicks’ championship. For KATSEYE, the same episode provided its first musical-guest appearance on one of American television’s longest-running live entertainment programs.
The Jalen Brunson SNL Season 52 premiere ultimately used both debuts as its opening-night identity: a championship-winning New York athlete at the center of the comedy and a rising global pop group handling the music as Saturday Night Live began another season.
