New Path in Ministry

Chen told viewers that he has been in seminary (religious school) for several years and recently completed a master’s degree in Christian studies. He said he is now pursuing a doctorate of ministry and will begin full-time Christian work.

He said he’s looking forward to a slower pace of life and a chance to “dig deeper” into his faith work. Chen also mentioned that being on the news often meant quick trips and sudden work, so he’s ready for a new rhythm that fits his family life better.

Support from Friends and Family

At Chen’s on-air farewell, his co-anchors and colleagues shared kind words and memories. Many in the newsroom admired his service and commitment over the years.

Chen’s wife, Ariell, publicly celebrated his new direction with pride on social media. The couple met years ago and shared their life and faith through the Vintage Church in Santa Monica, where they found a spiritual “home.”

Memories and Highlights

Chen reflected on moments in his career that meant a lot to him, including:

  • Feeling proud when China competed in its first Olympics, which was meaningful to his family.
  • Interviewing celebrities, including one of his favorite moments with actor Leonard Nimoy (“Mr. Spock”).
  • Gaining respect from viewers who would stop him in public for photos and greetings.

He said he will miss the job, especially the thrill of breaking news and being involved in important stories — but he’s excited about his new mission in ministry.

Bottom Line

After more than 30 years as a journalist, Ted Chen has retired from NBC4 News to focus on a new calling as a Christian minister. Friends, colleagues and fans celebrated his career while wishing him well in his new spiritual journey.
