‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3 Teaser Reveals a Darker Middle-earth and Major New Characters
Prime Video released the first Rings of Power Season 3 teaser during the show’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 24, offering an early look at a Middle-earth now fully consumed by war.
The new season will premiere on November 11, 2026, with its first four episodes arriving simultaneously on Prime Video. The story moves forward five years from the fall of Eregion, placing Sauron closer to creating the One Ring and extending his control across Middle-earth.
Middle-earth enters a more dangerous phase
Season 2 ended with Eregion destroyed and the Elven smith Celebrimbor dead. Season 3 begins after Sauron’s armies have spent years expanding across the world, leaving only a small number of territories capable of resisting him.
Prime Video’s official description identifies Khazad-dûm, Lindon and Rivendell among the remaining centers of opposition. Sauron, meanwhile, has established himself in Barad-dûr and is working to create the weapon that could allow him to control the peoples of Middle-earth.
The time jump gives the series room to move beyond the immediate aftermath of Eregion and into a larger military conflict. Reuters reported that showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay described the coming season as darker, with Sauron operating as a more dominant and ruthless force.
Celeborn, the Balrog and other characters join the story
The teaser provides the first substantial look at Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, the husband of Galadriel. His arrival introduces a relationship that has long been part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology but has not previously been explored in the series.
Simon Pegg will voice the Balrog, while Eddie Marsan will play Thrain, the older brother of King Durin IV. Andrew Richardson joins the cast as Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and brother of Isildur, and Adam Young appears as a mysterious Orc named Marnûkh.
Zubin Varla will portray Khamûl, an Easterling who becomes one of Sauron’s ring-servants. The season will also introduce the Nazgnagôl, described by Prime Video as Second Age predecessors to the Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, known from the original Lord of the Rings story.
What the teaser reveals about Season 3
The footage places Charlie Vickers’ Sauron at the center of the conflict. Rather than hiding behind another identity, he appears to be operating openly as the primary threat facing the Elves, Dwarves, Men and Wizards.
The return of Celeborn also changes Galadriel’s personal story. Their reunion is likely to unfold while the Elven territories attempt to survive Sauron’s advances and decide whether the Rings they possess can protect them without making them vulnerable to his influence.
Khazad-dûm appears increasingly isolated, while the introduction of Thrain adds another figure to the Dwarven royal family. Anarion’s arrival similarly expands the Númenórean side of the story as Elendil and Isildur move closer to their established roles in Tolkien’s history.
When Season 3 will be released
The first four episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will premiere on November 11 in more than 240 countries and territories. Prime Video has not yet detailed the schedule for the remaining episodes in the source material reviewed for this article.
