The Below Netflix trailer has surfaced, giving viewers their most extensive look yet at Josh Hartnett’s upcoming Newfoundland-set thriller. Netflix released the full trailer Thursday, September 10, ahead of the six-episode limited series’ October 8 premiere.

Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a fisherman whose coastal community becomes the target of a mysterious sea creature. In Netflix’s official guide to Below, the streamer confirms that Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton co-star in creator Jesse McKeown’s series, which was filmed on location in Newfoundland.

Below Netflix trailer puts danger beneath Newfoundland’s waters

The full trailer expands considerably on the earlier teaser Netflix released in July. Its central mystery begins with a coastal community confronting events that challenge even residents who have spent their lives around the ocean.

Calvin is already carrying the effects of earlier losses when the new threat emerges. His father died under mysterious circumstances decades earlier, and the fisherman is struggling to keep his family together as increasingly dangerous events begin affecting the town.

He eventually joins forces with visiting marine researcher Fonda Howander, played by Davis, as they investigate what is happening beneath the water. Heaton plays Calvin’s son Wade, whose own experiences become part of the mystery.

TV Insider independently reported on the September 10 full trailer, noting its emphasis on the unidentified threat and the questions surrounding what is happening to Wade.

Josh Hartnett leads a six-episode ensemble

Hartnett is joined by Davis and Heaton alongside Willow Kean as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney and Kaleb Horn as Noah.

The limited series comes from creator and showrunner Jesse McKeown, whose previous writing credits include The Umbrella Academy and 19-2. Karen Walton, Perry Chafe and Natty Zavitz are also credited as writers.

Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn directed episodes. Hartnett also serves as an executive producer alongside McKeown, Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall.

The six-episode format keeps Below relatively contained. Netflix plans to release the complete limited series on October 8 rather than stretching the mystery across a weekly schedule.

The setting is more than a backdrop for the creature story. Netflix filmed the series in Newfoundland and built the drama around a fishing community whose relationship with the ocean shapes both its economy and identity.

Hartnett told Netflix that he was drawn to the specificity of the setting and the voice of the scripts. Heaton similarly spent time around Newfoundland communities while preparing for the production, while the cast worked on the water rather than relying entirely on green-screen environments.

Netflix’s earlier behind-the-scenes account of the production says Heaton went onto the ocean in kayaks and boats while the actors immersed themselves in local culture and speech patterns.

That location work gives the new trailer an environment noticeably different from a conventional enclosed monster thriller. Boats, ice, open water and the isolated coastline are part of the danger rather than simply scenery surrounding it.

Netflix first introduced the series with a teaser in July, establishing Hartnett’s fisherman and the unknown danger surrounding the town. The September 10 full trailer is the more substantial new development, providing a longer look at the mystery and its effect on Calvin’s family.

The official Netflix title page now lists both the earlier teaser and the new full-length trailer, distinguishing the two pieces of promotional footage.

All six episodes will premiere October 8. Before its streaming debut, the series is also receiving festival exposure through the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Below Netflix trailer keeps the creature itself secondary to the uncertainty surrounding it. The footage instead concentrates on Calvin, his family and a community whose familiarity with the ocean no longer provides reassurance once something beneath it begins changing the rules.
