Big Brother Season 28 ratings are ending the summer on a year-over-year upswing, with viewers watching 14.8 billion minutes of the reality competition across CBS, Paramount+ and Pluto TV ahead of the Thursday, October 1 finale. CBS reported on September 30 that total minutes viewed increased 9% from 13.6 billion last summer.

The network also said Season 28 is averaging 5.1 million viewers in seven-day multiplatform measurement, an 8% increase from last year. Variety independently reported the 5.1 million average as the season approached its conclusion, while CBS said the current run has delivered the franchise’s highest full-episode streaming viewership on Paramount+.

Big Brother Season 28 ratings rise during a milestone year

The audience gains arrive during an unusually significant season for the American version of Big Brother. Beyond its summer ratings performance, the series crossed 1,000 original episodes in August, more than a quarter-century after the U.S. edition premiered in 2000.

The milestone brought the show two Guinness World Records. Guinness World Records confirmed that the August 27 broadcast established records for the most episodes of a primetime television show and the most episodes of a competitive reality television show.

That episode brought longtime host Julie Chen Moonves together with former Houseguests and members of the production team for a retrospective on the show’s history. The achievement is particularly notable for a format built around a summer schedule rather than a conventional year-round daily or weekly run.

CBS says Season 28 has also produced more than 52 hours of original Big Brother programming when Big Brother: Unlocked is included, the most original programming hours in a single season in the franchise’s U.S. history.

Streaming is becoming a bigger part of the Big Brother audience

The 14.8 billion-minute figure includes full episodes and live feeds viewed across CBS, Paramount+ and Pluto TV, making it a broader measurement than traditional linear television ratings alone. That distinction matters for a franchise whose format has always extended beyond its scheduled broadcasts.

Big Brother has long combined edited primetime episodes with near-continuous access to activity inside the house. Streaming has made that second part of the format easier to integrate into the same viewing ecosystem, allowing audiences to move between broadcast episodes, on-demand viewing and live feeds.

CBS also says Season 28 averaged 5.1 million viewers in seven-day multiplatform viewing, compared with the network’s reported 4.7 million average last summer. The network’s announcement further characterizes the season as television’s most social program of the summer when sports programming is excluded.

The network supplied those comparative and social measurements, so they are best understood as CBS’s own performance claims rather than independently standardized rankings across every television and streaming platform. The central year-over-year audience figures, however, were also reported by Variety.

Season 28 heads into its October 1 finale

The audience update arrives immediately before the season determines its winner. Rick Devens, Drew Campbell and Taylor Brown make up the final three, with the winner set to receive the $750,000 prize.

Devens entered Big Brother after competing on Survivor, giving the finale an additional franchise crossover storyline. CBS says a Devens victory would make him the first former Survivor contestant to win the U.S. edition of Big Brother.

The 90-minute finale airs Thursday, October 1, from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and is available through Paramount+ according to subscription and market availability. CBS’s official Season 28 episode guide confirms the finale date after a run that included the 1,000th episode in August and the final Head of Household competition beginning in the September 27 episode.

Whatever happens in the final vote, Season 28 has already given the long-running format a measurable audience gain during one of its biggest anniversary years. The combination of 14.8 billion minutes viewed, higher seven-day multiplatform viewership and the 1,000-episode milestone gives CBS a stronger finish to the summer than the franchise recorded a year earlier.
