Disney+ Greenlights New ‘Darkwing Duck’ Series With Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen
The Disney animated hero is returning in an all-new continuation, with Hamill voicing Drake Mallard, Rogen taking over as Launchpad McQuack and original creator Tad Stones consulting.
The Darkwing Duck Disney+ series is officially moving forward, with Disney bringing the masked crime fighter back in an all-new animated continuation led by Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen. Disney+ announced the greenlight on September 22, confirming Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, better known as Darkwing Duck, while Rogen will play his longtime ally Launchpad McQuack.
The project arrives 35 years after the original series debuted and is not simply recreating its starting point. Disney’s new premise places Darkwing in an alternate world where his superhero exploits have been forgotten, until a rebellious teenager named Duckie pushes him back into action and reconnects him with familiar allies and enemies.
Darkwing Duck Disney+ series brings Drake Mallard back
Disney+’s official announcement says the new series comes from Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui, who both serve as executive producers. Original Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones consulted during development.
The story begins with Darkwing having spent 35 years trapped in an alternate reality where no one knows about his history as a superhero. His circumstances change when Duckie, a teenager who knows about that forgotten past, arrives and draws him back into a fight that will reunite him with characters including Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana.
The premise also brings back established villains Negaduck and Megavolt, giving the continuation direct connections to the original show’s world while creating a new character and alternate-reality setup around its returning hero.

Variety independently confirmed that Disney+ has ordered the project to series after years of development surrounding a possible return for the character.
Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen lead the new voice cast
Hamill takes over the central role of Drake Mallard and Darkwing Duck. Rogen voices Launchpad McQuack and is also among the producers through Point Grey Pictures, the company he founded with Evan Goldberg and James Weaver.
Lizzy Caplan joins the cast as Gosalyn Mallard, with Lilimar playing the newly introduced Duckie. The larger ensemble includes Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
The Hollywood Reporter separately confirmed the Disney+ revival and its principal voice cast, including Hamill, Rogen, Caplan and Lilimar.
Rogen, Goldberg, Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham are producing for Point Grey Pictures. The company already has a recent relationship with Disney through its special-event installment of The Muppet Show, which Disney says won four Emmy Awards.
The original Darkwing Duck ran for 91 episodes
The original Darkwing Duck became part of Disney’s early 1990s television animation lineup after debuting in 1991. Disney Television Animation produced 91 episodes, with the series appearing on Disney Channel, ABC and in syndication.
Its original ABC run concluded in 1993, while the syndicated run continued until 1995 and briefly returned from 1996 to 1997. The character later expanded into video games and comics and eventually appeared again through the more recent version of DuckTales.
The new series therefore occupies an unusual position. It is a continuation built around the history of the original program, but its alternate-world premise gives the creative team room to reinterpret that history rather than simply resume the story where the earlier show ended.
TheWrap’s coverage of the greenlight also confirms that Stones is consulting while Tretta and Gorostegui lead the new iteration.
Disney has not announced a Darkwing Duck release date
Disney’s announcement does not provide a premiere date or episode count for the new series. Those details should therefore remain open rather than being inferred from the project’s series order.
The original show is currently available on Disney+, giving the streamer an existing library connection to the property as development proceeds on the continuation.
The September 22 announcement nevertheless moves the project beyond the development stage and establishes its central creative choices. Hamill is the new voice of Drake Mallard, Rogen is Launchpad, Stones remains involved as a consultant, and the story will use Darkwing’s 35-year absence as part of its premise rather than ignoring the time that has passed.
For a character built around the theatrical declaration that he is the terror that flaps in the night, the Darkwing Duck Disney+ series now has something more concrete than nostalgia behind it: an official series greenlight, a new voice cast and a defined story for Darkwing’s return.
