Disney Worldbuilders Sets August 20 Disney+ Premiere With James Cameron, Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau
Disney+ has set an August 20 premiere for Leslie Iwerks' documentary Disney Worldbuilders, featuring James Cameron, Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau, Bob Iger, Dave Filoni, Pete Docter and other major Disney storytellers.
Leslie Iwerks’ new documentary will examine how franchises including Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, Pixar and Frozen move from screen stories into Disney’s physical destinations.
Disney has set August 20 as the streaming premiere for Disney Worldbuilders, a new feature-length documentary from filmmaker Leslie Iwerks that brings together James Cameron, Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau and other influential figures behind some of the company’s biggest entertainment franchises. Disney+ confirmed the date on August 3 while also making the film’s official trailer available.
The documentary examines how stories from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Avatar, Frozen, Zootopia and other Disney properties are translated from films and television into physical theme-park lands and experiences. According to the official Disney+ announcement, the film will also offer glimpses of destinations and projects that are still being developed.
Disney Worldbuilders brings together major filmmakers and creative executives
Iwerks interviews a group whose work spans several generations and divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Participants include former Disney CEO and senior advisor Bob Iger, current Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, filmmaker James Cameron, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and filmmaker Jon Favreau.
The documentary also features Lucasfilm President and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush and Frozen writer-director Jennifer Lee.
Together, the interviews are intended to explore both the creators’ personal relationships with Disney storytelling and the process of transforming fictional environments into spaces audiences can physically enter.
Disney says the film looks at the relationship in both directions. Existing stories can inspire theme-park attractions and lands, while developments in physical spaces can also influence how franchises and creative ideas evolve.
The film will preview Disney projects still under development
One of the documentary’s more notable elements is its focus on future projects rather than functioning exclusively as a retrospective.
Disney says viewers will see upcoming lands and experiences being developed at destinations around the world. The company has not provided a complete list of every project featured, but the approach places Disney Worldbuilders at the intersection of entertainment documentary and behind-the-scenes preview.
The film arrives during an unusually active period of expansion for Disney’s theme-park business, where intellectual property from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, Avatar and Disney Animation increasingly shapes new attractions and themed environments.
The company first introduced the documentary in July with a teaser. Disney’s original July 22 announcement revealed the participant lineup and confirmed that Iwerks would direct, but at that point Disney had only said the film would arrive sometime in August.
The August 3 update therefore provides the specific streaming date and the fuller trailer rather than simply repeating the documentary’s original announcement.
Leslie Iwerks continues a family connection to Disney history
Iwerks brings an unusually direct personal connection to the subject. Her grandfather, Ub Iwerks, worked alongside Walt Disney during the company’s formative years and was instrumental in the development and animation of Mickey Mouse. Her father, Don Iwerks, became an influential camera technician and inventor at Walt Disney Studios.
Leslie Iwerks has also spent much of her own filmmaking career documenting creative and technical institutions. Her credits include The Pixar Story, The Imagineering Story, Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible and Disneyland Handcrafted.
Her production company, Iwerks & Co., independently lists Disney Worldbuilders as debuting at D23 on August 16 and on Disney+ on August 20.
D23 attendees will see the documentary before its streaming debut
Before the Disney+ launch, Disney Worldbuilders will receive its world premiere during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim on August 16.
The event will give attendees the first opportunity to watch the documentary in full. Disney had previously announced the D23 presentation when it introduced the project in July, with its fan organization detailing the documentary and its participants.
The D23 screening also gives Disney an opportunity to present the documentary to an audience already closely invested in the films, franchises and theme-park experiences it examines.
The documentary connects Disney’s biggest franchises under one creative theme
Although Disney routinely produces behind-the-scenes programming tied to individual films and parks, Disney Worldbuilders has a broader premise. It places creators from Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Disney Animation and the Avatar universe within the same discussion about how fictional worlds are constructed and extended beyond the screen.
That makes the documentary less about a single attraction or franchise and more about a business and creative model that has become central to modern Disney.
The next confirmed milestone will be the August 16 D23 premiere, followed four days later by the film’s global Disney+ release. With the August 3 date announcement and trailer now public, viewers have a clearer picture of when Disney’s latest behind-the-scenes documentary will move from preview to streaming release.
