At the June 25 premiere of The Old Guard 2 in Los Angeles, Henry Golding was asked about the rumors he could be the next James Bond. He gave a surprising answer. Golding said simply, “I think that’s every actor’s kind of nightmare.” He explained how the role is more than a job. It is a huge responsibility with a lot of expectations.

The Weight of Culture

Golding talked about the “overhanging cultural pressure” that comes with the role. The 38-year-old actor said that even though he loves the idea of being Bond, the pressure can be scary. He joked, “Maybe I’m just a p—-. I don’t know. But I think I would love it so much more if there wasn’t that overhanging cultural pressure.” He admitted the role is tempting. But it also feels like a lot to carry.

A New Take on 007?

Instead of stepping into Bond’s shoes, Golding proposed another idea. He suggested adding more agents or other “00” characters to the franchise. This could bring fresh stories without the same expectations.

  • He asked, “Why can’t they bring out more agents or more OOs?”
  • This way, actors could enjoy the spy world without the Bond title.
  • Golding thinks this could be “so much more fun” with fewer limits.

The History Behind Bond

James Bond began as a novel character by Ian Fleming in 1953. The first film, Dr. No, came out in 1962. Since then, many actors have played Bond:

Actor Years Active
Sean Connery 1962–1967
George Lazenby 1969
Roger Moore 1973–1985
Timothy Dalton 1987–1989
Pierce Brosnan 1995–2002
Daniel Craig 2006–2021

Craig ended his run with No Time to Die in 2021. He said the franchise needed a fresh start.

A New Director: Denis Villeneuve

On June 26, Amazon MGM Studios announced that Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve will helm the next Bond film. He’s known for movies such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and, most recently, Dune: Part Two.

In his statement, Villeneuve said, “I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.” This will be the first film produced under Amazon’s control as part of a new joint venture with old producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Who Will Be the Next 007?

The next Bond film has no lead actor yet. But several names are being mentioned:

  • Aaron Taylor‑Johnson
  • Idris Elba
  • Rege‑Jean Page
  • Henry Cavill
  • Tom Holland
  • Jacob Elordi
  • Harris Dickinson

The studio seems to prefer someone under 30, like Holland, Elordi, or Dickinson.

When Will It Come Out?

Filming has not started, and no release date has been announced yet. But reports say the movie could be released in 2028 at the earliest. This is a longer wait after 2021’s film.

Amazon’s Big Move

Amazon bought MGM in 2022 and now has full creative control of Bond. They spent about $1 billion to secure these rights. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are already working in London, as shown by Amazon MGM’s executives at CinemaCon in April.

Golding’s Next Steps

While the Bond role remains uncertain, Henry Golding is set to star in the sci‑fi romance Daniela Forever. The movie releases in theaters on July 11, 2025, and digitally on July 22. For now, he’ll enjoy his roles without the huge Bond identity. But he’ll also keep the conversation alive on how the franchise could grow beyond its hero.
