Beck Releases ‘Ride Lonesome,’ His First Album of All-New Material in Seven Years
The 12-track Capitol Records release reunites Beck with longtime collaborators from Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations, while a new “Run Away” video stars Shōgun actor Tadanobu Asano.
The Beck Ride Lonesome album is officially out. Beck released the 12-track record through Capitol Records on September 18, marking his first collection of entirely new material since 2019’s Hyperspace and reconnecting him with musicians who helped shape several of his most atmospheric earlier records.
The release arrived alongside a new music video for “Run Away,” starring Tadanobu Asano of Shōgun. Universal Music’s release announcement confirms that Beck produced the album, Nigel Godrich mixed it and longtime collaborators Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner reunited for the sessions at United Studios in Hollywood.
Beck Ride Lonesome album reconnects an old studio team
Ride Lonesome contains 12 songs, beginning with the title track and moving through “Run Away,” “In the Night,” “Failed Words,” “Bleed,” “Disappearing Act” and six additional tracks. Its arrival ends a seven-year gap between Beck albums made entirely from new material.
The personnel provide one of the clearest links between the new record and earlier phases of Beck’s career. Hormel, Waronker, Meldal-Johnsen, Manning and Falkner previously contributed to records including Mutations, Sea Change and Morning Phase. Godrich, whose history with Beck includes Mutations and Sea Change, returned to handle the mix.
Beck described the reunion during the album’s rollout as both familiar and changed, saying the musicians’ chemistry had developed over decades of working together. Rather than attempting to recreate an earlier album outright, the project brings that established group back into the same recording environment for a new set of songs.
TSJ previously included Beck’s Ride Lonesome in its September 2026 album calendar, identifying the reunion with his longtime collaborators and Godrich as one of the month’s more notable veteran releases. The completed album is now available rather than simply occupying a date on the release schedule.
‘Run Away’ video stars Tadanobu Asano
Beck accompanied the album with a new visual for its second track, “Run Away.” Directed by Mikai Karl and produced by Ryan Smale, the video stars Tadanobu Asano and was filmed against the Tokyo cityscape.
The video follows interwoven lives moving through the city while Beck’s piano- and guitar-led track provides the soundtrack. Asano gives the release a notable film and television connection after his recent work in Shōgun.
Rolling Stone Canada independently reported the video’s September 18 premiere, noting that Beck connected with collaborators in Japan while developing the project. Karl also directed earlier visuals from the Ride Lonesome campaign.
The “Run Away” release follows advance songs including the title track, “In the Night” and “Disappearing Act,” which established the quieter, more spacious direction of the record before its full arrival.
Ride Lonesome follows 2019’s Hyperspace
Beck’s previous studio album of new material, Hyperspace, arrived in 2019. The years between the two projects included singles, collaborations and live performances, but Ride Lonesome represents his first full collection of newly written material since that release.
The album has drawn comparisons with the more introspective side of Beck’s catalog, particularly Sea Change and Morning Phase. Those connections are grounded partly in personnel rather than simply mood: several musicians involved in those projects are physically back in the studio on the new record.
The Guardian’s review similarly places Ride Lonesome alongside those records, while emphasizing the perspective of an artist revisiting familiar emotional territory at a different stage of his life.
The track list closes with “Beyond the Light,” following “Falling Through My Hands” and “If You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Beck produced the record himself, with Godrich’s mixing providing another connection to his earlier studio work.
Beck’s rescheduled tour begins September 22
The album release also arrives just before Beck takes the material on the road. Production issues forced the first three scheduled dates in Vancouver, Woodinville and Portland to move, making Santa Barbara the revised opening night.
According to Beck’s official tour schedule, the North American run now begins September 22 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, followed by a September 23 performance at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The itinerary continues through cities including San Francisco, Morrison, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.
The rescheduled Vancouver, Seattle-area and Portland dates have moved to November, extending the tour beyond its originally planned October conclusion.
For Beck, the release brings together several strands of his catalog without simply turning the project into a retrospective. The musicians may be familiar, and the connection to records such as Sea Change and Morning Phase is difficult to miss, but the Beck Ride Lonesome album now stands as a new 12-song chapter, accompanied by a Tokyo-set video and a North American tour about to begin.
