Adam Lambert Joins RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims for George Michael Tribute at 2026 MTV VMAs
The surprise appearance capped a multi-artist salute that revisited “Faith,” “Father Figure,” “Careless Whisper” and “Freedom! ’90.”
Adam Lambert made a surprise appearance during the George Michael tribute 2026 MTV VMAs performance on Sunday, September 27, joining RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims and other singers for a multi-artist salute to Michael at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The completed tribute expanded significantly beyond the lineup CBS and MTV had announced five days earlier. RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims were originally confirmed for the performance, while Lambert emerged as an unannounced guest for “Freedom! ’90” as the tribute moved through songs spanning Michael’s career.

George Michael tribute at the 2026 MTV VMAs expands its lineup
CBS and MTV announced the tribute on September 22 with RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims as its three confirmed performers. The networks said the performance would recognize Michael’s legacy 40 years after Faith and ahead of new releases connected to his 1988 Faith Tour.
What viewers ultimately saw on Sunday was broader. Orville Peck introduced the tribute before Sombr opened with “Faith” and “Father Figure.” RAYE followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” Michael’s 1987 duet with Aretha Franklin, before Teddy Swims performed “Careless Whisper.”
Lambert then appeared for “Freedom! ’90,” turning his arrival into one of the performance’s surprises. Rolling Stone reported on the completed tribute, including Lambert’s addition to the previously announced lineup.
The tribute unfolded during a ceremony that already had several connections to TSJ’s recent VMA coverage. Madonna returned to the VMAs as the show’s opening performer, while Snoop Dogg hosted the Los Angeles ceremony and served as an executive producer.
Sombr performs in a jacket once worn by George Michael

The tribute extended beyond the songs themselves. Sombr performed while wearing a black Harley-Davidson leather jacket that had belonged to Michael and was worn during his Faith Tour.
People reported that Michael had also worn the jacket in a 1989 Diet Coke commercial. The garment gave Sombr’s portion of the performance a direct physical connection to the period of Michael’s career being celebrated.
That connection was particularly fitting for “Faith.” Released in 1987, the song became closely associated with Michael’s solo breakthrough and the visual identity surrounding the album of the same name.
Michael received MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1989. CBS and MTV noted that history when announcing the 2026 tribute, placing the performance within a relationship between Michael and the VMAs that stretches back decades.
RAYE and Teddy Swims revisit different parts of Michael’s catalog
Rather than having a single performer interpret Michael’s work, the VMAs divided the tribute among artists with different vocal approaches.
RAYE’s selection, “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” reached back to Michael’s collaboration with Aretha Franklin. Teddy Swims took on “Careless Whisper,” one of the most enduring songs associated with Michael and his years with Wham! before his solo career.
For RAYE, the segment was part of her first performance appearance at the VMAs. CBS and MTV had announced that she would perform both on her own and as part of the Michael tribute.
Sombr, meanwhile, entered the ceremony with three nominations. Teddy Swims returned to the VMA performance stage after previously appearing at the awards in 2024.
The tribute arrives ahead of new Faith Tour releases
The timing also connects the VMAs tribute to renewed attention around Michael’s Faith era. CBS and MTV said the performance comes ahead of the November 6 release of the George Michael: The Faith Tour live album.
A feature-length George Michael: The Faith Tour film is also scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on December 11, according to the official VMA announcement.
Michael died in December 2016 at age 53. The 2026 VMAs tribute arrives nearly a decade later, but its structure emphasized the continuing reach of his catalog by assigning the songs to artists from different generations and musical backgrounds.
The Hollywood Reporter also documented Lambert’s surprise appearance and the hit-filled sequence of performances.
What had initially been announced as a three-artist salute ultimately became a larger ensemble tribute. Lambert’s unannounced arrival gave the George Michael tribute 2026 MTV VMAs performance its final surprise while the set itself moved from “Faith” through several distinct chapters of Michael’s career.
