Pokémon TCG Adds a New Mega Attack Rare, While Pocket and Legends

Pokémon is going big on Mega Evolutions in 2025. The trading card game is getting a brand-new rarity. The mobile app is adding risky Mega cards. And the next main game puts Megas back in the spotlight. Here’s what’s changing, and when.

What’s new in the physical TCG

The Pokémon Trading Card Game introduced a new rarity called Mega Attack Rare (MAR). These cards put the attack name across the artwork in katakana, calling back to the classic XY-era Mega cards. The first three shown are Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Gardevoir ex, and Mega Lucario ex. The Pokémon Company also teased Mega Dragonite for the future. 

The first set in the new Mega Evolution series, simply called Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution, launches on September 26, 2025. Pokémon’s press asset page lists the date, and the product gallery confirms it for Pokémon Center too. 

Some local stores are already advertising pre-release events around September 13. Dates can vary by location, so check your nearest Play! Pokémon shop.

How the new cards may play

MAR is mainly a visual rarity. It’s about style and nostalgia. But it also pairs with a full Mega-focused block, so expect strong Mega ex attackers to headline sealed events and early metas this fall. 

Earlier in the year, Pokémon launched Black Bolt and White Flare. These twin sets celebrated Unova and added a special Black & White Rare (BWR) treatment with striking monochrome cards, including Reshiram ex and Zekrom ex. They hit English shelves on July 18, 2025, and helped set the stage for the Mega push. 

What’s changing in Pokémon TCG Pocket

The mobile app is also getting Mega Evolution ex this fall. Three cards are already shown: Mega Blaziken ex, Mega Altaria ex, and Mega Gyarados ex. There’s a twist. If your Mega gets knocked out, your opponent takes three prizes—which is enough to end the game in Pocket. It’s an instant loss risk. 

• Mega Gyarados ex: huge bulk, listed at 210 HP; its move can force discards. 
• Mega Altaria ex: 190 HP and a scaling damage move that loves a full bench. 
• Mega Blaziken ex: fast pressure; strong damage with a modest energy cost. 

Nintendo Life’s round-up also highlights the high-risk, high-reward nature of these Pocket Megas and pegs the rollout for “this Fall.” A full list of cards and the exact date are not yet announced. 

Why now? The video game tie-in

Pokémon Legends: Z-A lands on October 16, 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The game brings back Mega Evolution and updates the battle flow. The timing lines up with the TCG’s Mega push and Pocket’s new season. It’s a coordinated return for the Mega mechanic across the brand.
