Snoop Dogg to Host 2026 MTV VMAs as Awards Return to Los Angeles

Snoop Dogg 2026 MTV VMAs host duties are officially set. CBS and MTV announced Thursday, September 10, that the rapper and entertainment mogul will host the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards when the ceremony broadcasts live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27.

The appointment gives Snoop Dogg a central role in a show he has been part of for more than three decades. According to the official CBS and MTV announcement, he will also serve as an executive producer as the VMAs return to the West Coast for the first time since 2017.

Snoop Dogg made his main-stage VMA debut in 1994, two years after the release of Dr. Dre’s The Chronic helped introduce him to a national audience and one year after his debut album Doggystyle. His relationship with the awards show has continued through performances, tributes and collaborations spanning several eras of hip-hop.

MTV says Snoop is a 13-time VMA nominee and three-time winner. His previous appearances include closing the 1999 ceremony with Dr. Dre and Eminem, participating in a 2005 tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. and returning in 2022 for a performance with Eminem.

In announcing the hosting assignment, Snoop described his return as a full-circle moment and pointed to MTV’s role in giving hip-hop a national platform during the early years of his career.

The Associated Press independently confirmed the hosting announcement and noted that the 2026 ceremony will mark the VMAs’ first Los Angeles-area edition since 2017.

The VMAs are returning to Los Angeles

The September 27 ceremony will originate from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. The broadcast is scheduled for 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET, or 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT, and will air simultaneously on CBS and MTV while streaming through Paramount+ Premium in the United States.

The move west adds another change to this year’s ceremony after recent editions centered on New York and New Jersey. Snoop’s appointment gives the Los Angeles show a host closely associated with Southern California and the development of West Coast hip-hop.

He will also work behind the scenes. CBS and MTV list Snoop as an executive producer alongside a production team that includes Van Toffler, Jesse Ignjatovic, Barb Bialkowski, Bruce Gillmer, Barry Barclay and Floris Bauer, among others.

People also confirmed Snoop’s dual host and executive-producer roles, as well as his history as a three-time VMA winner.

Madonna leads the 2026 VMA nominations

Snoop will oversee a ceremony with an unusually competitive field of established stars. As TSJ reported when the 2026 MTV VMA nominations were announced, Madonna leads this year’s field with 11 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift with nine.

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven nominations each, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson are among the artists with five.

The ceremony has also added a major career honor to its lineup. Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award, an announcement MTV made September 9 on the 34th anniversary of the band’s first VMA performance.

Additional performers, presenters and special guests have not all been revealed. CBS and MTV said further names will be announced in the weeks leading up to the broadcast.

Snoop Dogg adds hosting to a long list of entertainment roles

The VMAs assignment continues Snoop Dogg’s expansion well beyond recording and touring. Over the course of his career, he has moved between music, television, film, sports programming, business ventures and live-event appearances while maintaining his identity as one of hip-hop’s most recognizable performers.

That breadth makes the hosting assignment different from simply booking a musical performer. The VMAs traditionally rely on hosts to move between performances, awards and celebrity appearances while establishing the tone of the live broadcast.

The September 27 ceremony will now put Snoop at the center of that format in Los Angeles, more than three decades after his first VMA stage appearance.

The Snoop Dogg 2026 MTV VMAs host announcement also gives this year’s ceremony another major piece of its lineup with less than three weeks remaining before the show. The remaining performers, presenters and special guests will determine how much further the 2026 VMAs build around the rapper’s return to MTV’s signature awards stage.
