Jhené Aiko Releases ‘Westside Whimsy,’ Her First Album in Six Years

The Jhené Aiko Westside Whimsy album has officially arrived, ending a six-year wait between full-length studio projects for the Los Angeles singer-songwriter. Released Friday, September 11, the 20-track record follows Aiko’s 2020 album Chilombo and brings together Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Tyga and OHMA as featured guests.

Def Jam’s parent company described the record as a project rooted in Aiko’s Los Angeles upbringing. In its official release announcement, Universal Music said Westside Whimsy was issued through ALLEL/Artclub/Def Jam Recordings and framed the album as a musical love letter to the city that shaped Aiko.

Kendrick Lamar appears on “So Good,” Ab-Soul joins “Love Bomb,” Tyga features on “Like, Whatever,” Larry June appears on “Neighbors,” and OHMA joins Aiko on closing track “Golden Coast.”

Apple Music’s official album listing confirms the September 11 release, 20-song track count and Def Jam copyright information. The record runs 55 minutes and moves through material including “Wild Cat(s),” “Ghost,” “Break,” “Ceiling (freestyle),” “Beach Boy” and “A Living Light.”

The platform’s editorial notes characterize the album as a journey through Aiko’s Southern California home territory, with the production continuing the atmospheric R&B sound that has defined much of her solo catalog.

The highest-profile collaboration is “So Good,” which brings Aiko and Lamar together again after a musical relationship stretching back more than a decade.

Pitchfork reported on the reunion as the album arrived, noting that Lamar previously appeared with Aiko on “Stay Ready (What a Life)” from her 2013 Sail Out EP. Their connection reaches even earlier through Lamar’s Overly Dedicated era.

The collaboration therefore works as more than an attention-grabbing guest verse. Both artists emerged from overlapping Southern California music communities before growing into major figures in contemporary R&B and hip-hop.

Lamar is also consistent with the broader concept of Westside Whimsy. Aiko has described her musical identity as heavily influenced by the rap, R&B and soul she heard growing up in Los Angeles, making regional memory part of the record rather than simply its marketing backdrop.

Westside Whimsy follows Chilombo after six years

The release is Aiko’s first full studio album since Chilombo, which arrived in 2020 and became one of the most commercially and critically significant records of her career.

That six-year gap gives Westside Whimsy a different context from a conventional album-cycle follow-up. Aiko continued releasing music and appearing on collaborations during the interval, but she did not rush another full-length project into the marketplace.

The finished album instead arrives with 20 songs and a concept broad enough to connect place, relationships, family, healing and personal reflection.

Aiko is pushing back on speculation about the album

Some early listener discussion focused on whether material dealing with difficult relationships was aimed at former partner Big Sean. Aiko has directly rejected at least some of those interpretations.

After listeners connected “He Belongs” to Sean, Aiko responded that the song was not about him, according to Complex’s account of her clarification.

That distinction is important because lyrical themes should not automatically be treated as factual descriptions of specific real-world relationships. The album can be discussed as personal work without assigning individual songs to people Aiko has not identified herself.
