Netflix Orders Manifest Arrivals Spinoff From Original Creator Jeff Rake

Netflix is returning to the world of Manifest. The streamer announced August 28 that a Manifest Arrivals spinoff, titled Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, is moving forward with original series creator Jeff Rake and key members of the creative team behind the supernatural drama.

The new series will not simply continue the story of Flight 828. According to Netflix’s official announcement for Arrivals, the drama begins when another aircraft crash-lands in Denver and the surviving passengers emerge with no memory of who they are, where they came from or what happened before the crash.

The central premise places a young social worker and a rookie Homeland Security agent alongside the mysterious passengers as they attempt to understand the crash and prevent what Netflix describes as a potential global catastrophe. The investigation becomes more complicated when the pair discovers that they may be tied to the mystery themselves.

Jeff Rake returns as a co-creator and co-showrunner, joined by Margaret Easley and Laura Putney. Both worked on the original Manifest as co-executive producers and now move into expanded creative roles on the new series.

The announcement was timed for August 28 at 8:28 a.m. Pacific, an intentional reference to Flight 828, the fictional flight at the center of the original show. Entertainment Weekly reported on the Flight 828-inspired rollout and confirmed that the new project is designed around a fresh set of characters rather than simply reopening the ending of the original series.

Jeff Rake is building the story for old and new viewers

Rake told Netflix that the goal is to make Arrivals accessible both to established Manifest viewers and audiences encountering the universe for the first time. That is an important distinction for a franchise whose mythology accumulated across four seasons of callings, disappearances, prophetic visions and increasingly elaborate explanations for Flight 828.

The original series began on NBC in 2018 with passengers landing in New York after what seemed to them like a routine flight from Jamaica. Outside the aircraft, however, more than five years had passed. The passengers returned to families who had aged, changed and in some cases moved on without them.

NBC canceled Manifest after three seasons, but the show’s arrival on Netflix created an unusual second life. It became one of the platform’s most visible examples of a canceled broadcast series finding a massive streaming audience, eventually prompting Netflix to order a fourth and final season.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Netflix’s greenlight and the return of the original creative team, giving the franchise another chapter several years after the conclusion of the flagship show.

Manifest became significantly bigger after moving to Netflix

Netflix says all four seasons of Manifest have accumulated more than 130 million views since early 2023. The company also says the fourth season spent nine weeks in its Global Top 10 English TV rankings and reached No. 1 in more than 90 countries.

Those figures help explain why the streamer is returning to the property despite the original series having received a deliberate conclusion. Rather than undoing that finale, Arrivals gives Netflix a way to preserve the franchise’s mystery-driven identity while introducing a separate incident.

The development also follows the broader streaming practice of extending recognizable television properties through new characters and connected stories rather than relying exclusively on direct sequels.

The original Manifest cast helped establish the franchise

Manifest starred Melissa Roxburgh as Michaela Stone and Josh Dallas as Ben Stone, siblings who were passengers on Flight 828. The ensemble also included J.R. Ramirez, Parveen Kaur, Luna Blaise, Matt Long and Athena Karkanis across its run.

Roxburgh and Dallas both reflected on the show’s unexpected streaming revival in Netflix’s announcement. Their comments underscore how unusual the series’ path was: a network cancellation was followed by renewed audience momentum, a Netflix rescue, a completed ending and now a separate franchise extension.

The original show is currently available on Netflix, allowing the platform to keep its full back catalog accessible as it develops the new installment.

What Netflix has not announced about Arrivals

Several significant details remain under wraps. Netflix has not announced the principal cast, an episode count, a production start date or a premiere window for Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery.

There is also no confirmation that Roxburgh, Dallas or other original cast members will appear in the new series. The announced premise instead emphasizes new characters and a separate aviation mystery.

That makes the Manifest Arrivals spinoff a franchise expansion rather than a conventional fifth season. The creative continuity comes from Rake, Easley and Putney, while the story itself appears designed to establish a new group of people facing the kind of impossible event that originally made Flight 828 the center of the series.
